Types of Personal Grants

Personal grants are the best way for Canadians to fund their projects and endeavours, while keeping their debt load to a minimum. Canadians have access to hundreds of different personal grants depending on their unique needs which include funds for buying that new home, doing home renovations, starting your own business, paying medical related expenses, and certain ones for just being a Canadian minority.

These money donations are offered through the government as well as private businesses and non-profit agencies. Read on below to find out more details on the specific personal grants that you may be eligible for.

Personal Grants for Your Home

If you are looking at buying a new home or doing renovations to your current house and property you can likely qualify for sizeable grants to help subsidize this large investment. Ones to consider include the GST/HST New Housing Rebate and the Home Improvement EcoENERGY subsidy.

The GST/HST New Housing Rebate can be very helpful if you are looking to buy a brand new home. After finalizing your purchase the Canadian government will reimburse you on part of the GST or the federal part of the HST that you have already paid out.

And if you already own your home but are looking to make some necessary changes, check to see whether your renovation job qualifies for the EcoEnergy Retrofit grant. This grant will cover a significant portion of home improvements that help reduce your home’s energy consumption. Eligible improvements include updating your heating system, cooling system, ventilation system, insulation, and air sealing in your home, amongst other changes as well. This is, of course, providing that you use the approved new product outlined by the government.

Personal Grants for Health- Related Expenses

Fortunately here in Canada, Canadians do not have to pay for their healthcare. But what they do have to pay for is many of the other related expenses that are often inevitable when seeking health care treatment. These include prescriptions, assistive devices, commuting costs, and sometimes even accommodations. If you can prove financial necessity and that you don’t have a private insurance company subsidizing your cots then you will likely qualify for a variety of different personal grants to cover these health-related expenses. Grant funds to check out include the Northern Health Travel Grant Program (for northern Ontario residents); the Travel Assistance Program (for residents of British Columbia), and the Trillium Drug Program (also for Ontario residents), amongst other smaller foundations to be located in the other provinces.

Personal Grants for Minorities

There are millions of people considered minorities here in Canada. This can be based on race as well as on gender. Anyone not born in Canada is considered an ethnic minority; and even if you were born in Canada, if you are a female you are still considered a minority in this male dominated world.

To help even out the playing field for these minority groups many organizations, both public and private, offer personal grants to help these individuals get a quality education to qualify for higher end positions in already established companies; or give personal grants that minorities can use to start up a successful small business of their own. Grant funds to check out include the Aboriginal Program (for Aboriginals), The Soroptimist Foundation (for women), and the Black Canadian Scholarship Fund (for blacks), among others.
